A longtime state senator and world champion surfer, Hawaii’s Fred Hemmings offers a calabash full of ideas for the future of the 50th State – including a sprinkling of “random thoughts” from a local boy’s perspective. Are the Islands on the right track? You decide! As they say in the Islands: If can, can. If no can, no can! Fred Hemmings is a Hawaiian waterman, renowned outrigger canoe steersman and international surfing champion who won the World Surfing Championships in 1968. He retired from competitive surfing and inaugurated the world’s first major professional surfing events, including the Pipe Masters. In 1976 he co-founded International Professional Surfing, the world’s first pro surf tour. From 1984 to 1990, Hemmings was a Republican leader in the Hawaii State House of Representatives. In 2000, he was elected to the State Senate, where he served as senate leader.
